When Does the Death Card Actually Mean… Death?

Hey everyone, I’m new to tarot, so please go easy on me 😅

I’ve been working with the Modern Witch deck and keep wondering — have you ever seen the Death card actually point to someone physically passing away? I know it usually signals the end of a chapter or a big transformation, but I’d love to hear examples where it truly meant literal death.

Did other cards in the spread make it clear, or did you rely more on intuition, spirit guides, or other signs? Any insights or experiences would be super helpful. Thanks!

I’d definitely start paying attention if both The Tower and the 9 of Swords showed up in the same spread. I’ve never actually seen it happen myself, but honestly, that combo would definitely set off some alarm bells for me.

I usually interpret Death literally when it relates to past deaths. For example, I once did a reading for a pregnant friend and pulled the Death card along with the Queen of Cups. At first, we weren’t sure if it was about the end of her life before becoming a mother, the closing of the pregnancy cycle, with the Queen of Cups representing her new maternal role — or if it was pointing to the death of her maternal grandmother, with the Queen of Cups symbolizing her stepping into a new role as a family connector.

In the end, she felt the spread was about the latter. For me, that’s an example of how the Death card can reference a past passing.
