Physical Tarot vs Digital Tarot - Does It Matter?

Quick question about physical tarot vs digital tarot.

I'm kind of in the closet about my tarot practice because I live with very Christian parents who wouldn't be thrilled if they knew. So I've been using the Labyrinthos app, since it's pretty low-key and doesn't scream "tarot app."

Is reading tarot digitally a decent way to learn and practice, though, especially without any physical shuffling? I didn't research a ton when I started, just picked up the basics and went from there. Sometimes the readings really hit home, other times they don't, and I still have trouble clearly understanding what the cards are trying to say (probably just beginner stuff).

I've been using the app for about a year now, so curious what more experienced readers think. Is digital tarot "valid," or am I missing something important by not using physical cards?

Honestly, tarot apps are totally fine, especially when you’re learning. A lot of readers, myself included, have used apps and still gotten really accurate, meaningful readings, so don’t stress about not being able to physically shuffle.

If you want to try physical cards but need to keep it low-key, try cartomancy. A regular playing card deck is about as inconspicuous as you can get - you probably already have one. Cartomancy and RWS tarot come from the same roots, so switching over is pretty straightforward and many meanings overlap. It’s a nice way to get hands-on with cards without drawing attention.

Digital for now, especially for safety. There’s nothing wrong with that. Once you’re living on your own, you can take your time finding a physical deck that actually feels right.

I’ve been teaching tarot for over 20 years, and digital magick is a real thing. Use whatever tools you have. The medium matters a lot less than your intention, your focus, and the relationship you build with the cards.
