Look it over first, take out any random notes or photos tucked in the box, and check for sticky residue or water damage. If anything weird is stuck to the cards, gently clean with a soft dry cloth; avoid harsh cleaners that could ruin the printing.
For the energetic part, I usually shuffle the deck a lot while thinking of my own intention, then do a simple one-card or three-card spread as a "hello" reading. Other easy options: leave the deck out under moonlight for a night (not in direct sun, that fades the art), pass it through smoke if that sits well with you (be mindful of cultural sources), or use sound like a bell or singing bowl. I don’t recommend piling cards directly in salt — salt can be fine around the deck or in a bowl nearby, but it can also damage edges if you’re not careful.
I like to name the deck or say aloud that it’s mine now, just a short intention-setting. Finally, store it in a cloth bag or box away from heat and humidity. If none of that feels necessary, honestly, you can just start working with it; the deck will tell you what it needs.
