How Often Do You Do Tarot Readings?

I've been doing tarot and oracle for a few years now, but I almost never pull out my tarot deck. I think I’ve got this habit of treating oracle cards as the casual, everyday type of reading and reserving tarot for big life stuff or major shifts.

Because of that, I’m not as confident with tarot as I’d like to be, even after four years of practice (which feels like forever to me, even if others think it’s not much).

So I’m curious — how often do you all do readings, and what kinds of occasions do you use each deck for? If you’re like me and only bring tarot out for “special” moments, how do you keep learning and getting better with it?

I try to pull cards every day, though honestly it usually ends up being every other day. I always do a little journaling when I read. Some sessions are just one or two cards, but my go-to is a six-card spread: check-in, challenges/how to face them, blessings/how to receive them, and guidance.

My life is pretty settled, so I don't do as many big readings anymore, and that's fine. I actually like the balance of smaller daily check-ins—lower emotional stakes and easier to keep up.

If you want to do more tarot, just do it. There's no wrong way to practice. Funny enough, I do the opposite of what you described: tarot for daily stuff and oracle cards for deeper readings or to pair with tarot. You could try pulling an oracle card and a tarot card together, then journal or sit with how they connect and what you might bring into your day.

I've always felt way more connected to oracle cards — they just click for me. I get why people prefer tarot's structure, and sure, some folks think oracles are a bit kitschy or relentlessly upbeat (and some decks definitely are). Still, I've curated some really unique, balanced oracle decks, and I can do a full reading with them that feels as deep and accurate as tarot, sometimes even more so.

I read professionally, so I do client readings every week, but my personal practice is sporadic. I might go a month or two without touching the cards, then have a couple of weeks where I'm reading every day. It's not always about major life stuff either — a lot of the time I'm just playing with the cards or practicing.

I'm comfy with my decks now, but tarot never came naturally and it still feels less intuitive than oracles. If it feels right I’ll do a full oracle spread, but most of the time I pull a few tarot cards as a base. My tarot deck was a treasured gift from a friend and it's consistently been accurate for me, which is why I pushed myself to learn the system even though it took effort.

I've wondered if I might click more with Lenormand or Kipper. Haven't tried them yet, but maybe someday.
