Is the Seven of Swords always about deception? Other ways to read it?

I’m curious how you interpret the Seven of Swords in the RWS — I keep getting stuck on it. Most guides call it deception or sneakiness, but that doesn’t always sit right for me. Sometimes the image reads more like someone gathering resources, ideas, or information — almost collecting something to bring into the situation or toward another card.

Since swords are about thoughts and truth, I wonder if it can mean gathering thoughts or selectively sharing information. In a recent spread I pulled the Queen of Wands and the Seven, both upright. It looked like the figure was carrying ideas toward the Queen, but glancing back at the two swords left behind — like he’s holding something back, telling part of the truth but not all. That felt less like outright lying and more like caution or strategy.

Now I’m half-wishing I’d grabbed a clarifier 😅

What have you seen with the Seven of Swords? Any alternative or personal takes that helped you work with it?

Honestly, I read the Seven of Swords as strategy and planning more than outright deception. Deceit feels like the negative side of that. Upright, I take it as being strategic, which can include sneaky moves if the situation calls for them; reversed usually means you’ve been deceived or are realizing you were misled. Like any card, the question and context change everything.

I usually read the Seven of Swords as carrying a deceitful vibe even when it’s upright, but context changes everything. One detail I always notice is how the guy is holding the swords, grabbing them by the blades — to me that looks like sneaky behavior that’s actually hurting him.

It can also point to subconscious self-sabotage, like slipping away from someone or a situation because they’re scared to say how they feel or leave their comfort zone. Spirit might be nudging them toward growth, but it feels terrifying, like jumping into the unknown. Folks channeling this card often have unresolved wounds, and avoiding new experiences or refusing to face past trauma ends up doing more damage. I see the figure as trying to escape triggers they haven’t healed from, trying to sneak back to what feels “normal,” even if it’s harmful.

Of course context matters — you can’t read a card by itself. Hope this helps 🙂
