Is the Seven of Swords always about deception? Other ways to read it?

Hey everyone, I’m curious how you all interpret the Seven of Swords, because I often feel a bit stuck with this one. I’m specifically talking about the classic RWS deck.

Most of the time it’s labeled as deception or sneakiness, but in some readings that meaning just doesn’t seem to fit. Sometimes the image feels more like someone gathering resources, ideas, or information — almost collecting something to bring into the situation or toward another card.

Since swords deal with thoughts, truth, and mentality, I’ve wondered if it can represent gathering thoughts or selectively sharing information. In a recent reading, I pulled the Queen of Wands and the Seven of Swords, both upright. It almost looks like the figure is carrying ideas or truths toward the Queen of Wands, but because he’s looking back at the two swords left behind, maybe he’s holding something back — telling some of the truth, but not all of it. That doesn’t necessarily feel deceptive to me, just cautious or strategic.

Now I’m half-wishing I’d pulled a clarifier 😅

What do you think? How else have you seen the Seven of Swords show up in readings, and what are some alternative or personal interpretations you’ve found helpful?

For me, the Seven of Swords often comes across as strategy and planning rather than deception by default. Deceit feels more like a negative expression of strategy. I usually read it as upright = being strategic (which can include deception if that’s what the situation calls for), and reversed = having been deceived or realizing you’ve been misled. Like with any card, though, it really depends on the question and the context of the reading.

I usually see the Seven of Swords as potentially deceitful even upright, but it really depends on the context. One thing I look at is how the man is holding the swords — he’s gripping them by the sharp edges, which could suggest that being deceitful or sneaky is actually causing him harm.

It can also reflect subconscious self-sabotage — sneaking away from a person or situation because they’re scared to express their feelings or step outside their comfort zone. Spirit might be pushing them toward growth, but it feels scary, like jumping into the unknown. People channeling this card’s energy often carry a lot of unresolved wounds, and avoiding new experiences or refusing to face past trauma ends up hurting them more. I see the figure as trying to escape triggers because they haven’t healed yet, essentially trying to sneak back to what feels “normal,” even if it’s harmful.

Of course, context is everything — you can’t read a card in isolation. Hope this perspective helps! 🙂
