Celtic Cross Position 7 — Advice or the Querent’s Perspective?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for a bit of clarification on Celtic Cross position 7. I keep seeing different interpretations for what it’s supposed to represent — some sources say it’s advice, others say it’s the querent’s attitude/perspective or influence, and I’ve even seen it described as the querent’s power.

I’ve only done one Celtic Cross so far and read position 7 as the querent’s attitude, then pulled a separate 3-card spread for advice afterward. Just curious — how do you usually read position 7 in your own practice?

For me, position 7 is always self and position 8 is other — or you could say 7 is the inner state and 8 is the outer influence. Another way I look at it is 7 = action, 8 = reaction.

For example, in one reading I had the Empress in 7 and the 4 of Wands reversed in 8. I explained it to the querent as: you’re trying to live your best, authentic life, but the message coming from the world around you is that you’re “throwing everything away” — it was a breakup reading, so that really fit.

Then for me, card 9 shows the repeating pattern. You either listen to 7 and push through, which lets you level up into 10, or you give in to the pressure of 8 and end up looping back to card 1.

That’s just how I tend to read those positions 🙂

In Waite’s original setup there were actually two spots tied to the querent — the Significator and position 7 (“Himself”), which honestly always felt a bit redundant to me. Later on, Eden Gray split Hopes and Fears, keeping Hopes in position 9 and moving Fears to position 7. That’s the structure I’ve been using since the early ’70s, though I’ve renamed them to better fit how I read.

For me, position 7 represents a reaction to the changes shown in the Near Future card. It’s where self-limiting, defensive, or even self-sabotaging attitudes live. I think of it as the psychic basement — the root of self-limitation.

Position 9, on the other hand, I now call Aspirations. It’s not just wishful thinking, but what the querent genuinely wants and is willing to put effort into achieving — the root of self-motivation.
