Tips for understanding readings

I’m still pretty new to tarot and would really love some guidance from more experienced readers.

One thing I struggle with is reading objectively — especially when I’m asking about a situation that’s emotionally charged for me. I notice that my hopes or desired outcome can kind of… steer the interpretation. How do you separate what you want from what the cards are actually saying?

Also, how do you handle readings about situations where you don’t have much information to begin with? If there aren’t many concrete details, how do you know whether your interpretation actually resonates or if you’re just filling in the gaps?

Another thing: experienced readers seem to read so fluently. When I pull multiple cards, I sometimes get stuck trying to blend them into one cohesive message. I’m still learning the basic meanings, so I tend to look them up one by one — but that can make the reading feel choppy and disconnected. Any tips on weaving multiple cards together into a smoother, clearer narrative?

I also once asked a more experienced reader to interpret the same spread I did, and their take was wildly different from mine. I know tarot isn’t rigid or one-note, but it made me feel like I was way off. How do you build confidence in your interpretations?

And one more beginner question that’s been on my mind:

How do you differentiate between cards that share similar themes? For example, The High Priestess, Ace of Cups, The Magician, and The Moon can all connect to intuition in some way.

If they all carry that thread, how do you tell them apart in a reading? Do you need to lean on their other symbolic meanings to get more specific? Or if one of those shows up, is it fair to assume the message is mainly about intuition? I sometimes catch myself lumping them together, and I’m wondering what helped you really distinguish their nuances.

It really is a skill, and honestly the biggest thing is practice. The more you read, the more natural it starts to feel.

One of the first things that helped me was learning how to read a card without immediately running to a guidebook. Definitely study the basic meanings (we all start there), but when you’re actually doing a reading, don’t try to recite keywords from memory. Focus on the core idea instead.

For example, instead of memorizing that Judgement = “new beginnings” and forcing that phrase onto your situation, really look at the imagery. People rising from graves, a call being sounded, something long buried coming back into awareness. In one spread that might feel less like “new beginning” and more like “bringing something hidden back into the light” or “reviving something that was dormant.” Let the image speak in the context of the question.

A few other random suggestions:

I personally recommend using reversals (totally your choice, of course). I feel like they give the deck more vocabulary and nuance. They don’t have to mean “bad” — sometimes they just refine or internalize the energy. For me, they help clarify things rather than complicate them.
Be as clear and specific as you can with your question and your spread. Before you flip a card, know what position it’s in. Is this card “past influences”? “Your internal state”? “Advice”? Having that framework gives the card a job to do.
Try to look for an overall message or thesis in the spread. I usually get a sense that each card is playing a role in a bigger point. If one card seems obvious or redundant, instead of dismissing it, ask how it adds context or depth to the others.

Tarot really uses both sides of your brain. There’s logic, structure, symbolism — but also intuition and pattern recognition. It’s about seeing the forest and the trees.

As for reading for situations where you don’t have much info: go with your gut. You’re always working with something — even just the way the question is phrased. You’d be surprised how much your intuition can pick up from tone and wording alone. Trust yourself, and let the surrounding cards provide context.

I’ve also heard a reader I respect suggest pulling a significator at the start — kind of like a quick snapshot of the querent’s state of mind — to give yourself a foothold before interpreting the rest. I don’t always do it, but it can definitely help when you feel like you’re reading in the dark.

At the end of the day, you really have to figure out your own learning style. People can share what worked for them (and that can definitely help), but your way of reading is something you develop over time. There isn’t one “correct” method, and intuition isn’t one-size-fits-all.

No one can really tell you you’re wrong, either. Intuition is personal. It’s going to show up differently for each reader. For example, when I’m reading, I usually understand the general message of the spread — but sometimes a specific detail in the artwork grabs my attention and shifts the interpretation slightly. For me, that’s part of the conversation happening in the moment.

The biggest thing is confidence. Trust what you’re picking up. The more you second-guess yourself, the harder it is to hear your own intuitive voice. Stay open, stay grounded, and remember that your style will evolve naturally as you keep practicing.
