If you look closely, in many decks the figure in The Star is holding two jugs of water. One is poured straight into the pool, while the other is poured onto the land, forming a small stream that eventually flows back into the main body of water.
I like to think of this imagery as representing where we direct our hopes, dreams, and emotional energy. Part of that energy goes directly back into the collective or emotional flow (the water), while another part is invested into the world around us (the land), where it slowly finds its way back.
Since the card is often connected with Aquarius, there’s also the element of discernment. Aquarius is an air sign, and in tarot the air element is associated with the suit of Swords, which can symbolize thoughts, awareness, intuition, and communication. Because of that, I sometimes read this card as a reminder to be thoughtful about where we place our hope and energy — to check in with our higher self and ask what truly deserves our faith and effort.
Water, on the other hand, connects to the suit of Cups, which deals with emotions, intuition, healing, and hope. So the card can raise questions like: what needs healing right now? How do we approach that healing? What do we need to understand or communicate to move forward?
Also, when Major Arcana cards appear in a spread, many readers see them as pointing to bigger life themes or forces that are somewhat beyond our direct control. The exception some people mention is when The Magician appears alongside them, since that card is often associated with personal agency and the ability to influence outcomes.
Just one way to look at it, but I hope it helps a bit! ✨
