A couple things you can try.
First, it could just be the deck. Some decks make it way easier to connect meanings to the art than others. If the images don’t speak to you, try a different deck and see if one clicks more.
Second, a lot of this comes from doing more readings. Instead of immediately grabbing the book or list of meanings, spend time really looking at the cards. What jumps out at you in the picture? What do those details mean to you? You’ve already got tons of life experience and associations to pull from.
Watch for symbols - colors, clouds, mountains, posture, objects - all of that can give you info. Try writing down your first reaction, even if it’s something like “ugh I hate this card, why?” That kind of reflection teaches you a surprising amount.
Also try working with spreads rather than single cards. Cards start talking to each other and meanings become clearer in context. The more time you sit with them and trust your own gut and pattern sense, the more natural readings will feel.
