Okay, so here’s the gist in plain forum speak:
Historically, the whole “elements in tarot” thing comes from Aristotle, alchemy, and the idea that the four elements are basic building blocks of the universe. I could go deep into that, but brain’s fried right now 😅 — I can drop some reading sources if you want the full nerd version.
Practically speaking, each suit is tied to an element, and that element links to a part of life:
Cups → Water → emotions
Swords → Air → mind/intellect
Wands → Fire → creativity/action
Pentacles → Earth → material/physical stuff
A lot of these associations also tie back to astrology — like Swords/Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and even the Major Arcana can be linked to planets or zodiac signs (e.g., Lovers = Gemini).
Some tarot systems get super detailed about this, especially stuff from the Golden Dawn tradition (which Waite and Crowley were part of), but people tweak or adjust the associations however they like.
Elements can also interact in readings: some combinations amplify each other (Fire + Air), some clash (Fire + Water), and some balance nicely (Earth + Water).
Basically, it’s another “layer” you can play with in your readings. If it doesn’t click for you or feel useful, it’s totally fine to ignore it.
