Seven of Swords as feelings – how to interpret in a non-traditional deck?

Hey everyone,

I’m doing a reading for my friend about a guy she’s interested in, and I pulled the Seven of Swords as his feelings. They met at their old jobs and stay in touch, but she’s currently in a rocky relationship. This guy has said he’s interested in her but is being respectful and treating her platonically. I didn’t ask for more details so I wouldn’t influence the reading.

I’m using the Enchanted Tarot, and in this deck the 7 of Swords represents opposition, not the usual deceit/trickery you see in traditional RWS decks. There’s almost a calm energy to it. My thought is that he might feel conflicted — like “she has a boyfriend, so I shouldn’t feel this way” — or that there’s some kind of blockage in his romantic feelings.

I’m kind of stumped because I’ve never drawn this card in this kind of context before. The rest of the reading is fairly positive (he sees her as 10 of Cups, for example), which makes me think he does have romantic interest.

Has anyone seen the Seven of Swords as feelings before? How would you interpret it here?

For me, the 7 of Swords in an emotional context reads as avoidance.

I see it as sneaky energy — but it can be calm sneaky. Honestly, this card really fits a guy in love with someone who isn’t available. Even though he’s being respectful, the 7 of Swords shows that kind of situation a lot: someone mentally wrestling with their feelings, feeling blocked, or dealing with grief and frustration over unrequited love.

MarcusBr85 I tend to read the 7 of Swords here more as subtle or restrained energy rather than deceit. In this context it actually feels like someone holding back feelings because the situation isn’t open. It can point to mental conflict, frustration, or unexpressed attraction when someone is unavailable, even if they’re acting respectfully on the surface.
