Book recommendations to understand The Hermetic Tarot (Godfrey Dowson), especially its symbolism?

I’ve just started working with The Hermetic Tarot and want to actually study it, not just do quick readings.

Any book recommendations that unpack Golden Dawn symbolism, the astrological and kabbalistic correspondences, and the card art details? I’m also down for YouTube channels, articles, or any other resources that help make sense of the imagery and the broader esoteric system behind the deck.

Putting Nora aside, Tarot and Astrology by Corrine Kenner really helped me get my head around the Golden Dawn system behind that deck.

It clears up a lot of the structure, especially the astrological correspondences and how they link to the card names and imagery. Once that clicks, reading the pictures becomes way easier.

After that you can pick which direction to go deeper into. Kabbalah and the Hebrew alphabet are part of the same framework, so those are good next layers once the basics start making sense.

Robert Wang’s The Qabalistic Tarot could be really useful for what you’re after. He goes through each card in the Golden Dawn system and also compares them to the Thoth, Rider-Waite-Smith, and Marseille traditions, so you can see where the correspondences line up and where they don’t.

It’s more approachable than a lot of the dense Golden Dawn material, so it serves as a nice bridge into what Dowson was working from in The Hermetic Tarot, even though that deck piles on a lot more symbolic detail.

If you're still hunting, check out The Magical Tarot of the Golden Dawn by Pat Zalewski and Chris Zalewski - it’s probably the most direct deep dive for that deck. It's a big, dense book that goes through the system in detail and stays close to the Golden Dawn framework the Hermetic Tarot comes from. The explanations are thorough, getting into symbolism, correspondences, and the underlying structure in ways that actually tie back to what you see on the cards. Not light reading, but if you want to study the deck properly it's one of the most complete resources out there.
