Assigning Tarot Cards to Deities

Anyone here assign specific tarot cards to gods, goddesses, angels, demons, spirits, or other mythic beings you work with? I’ve seen people do that in deity work and I’m curious how common it is and how others approach it.

These are the mappings I’ve built over time. How would you map them differently?

Lilith (Queen of Demons): The Devil, The Moon (Black Moon Lilith), The High Priestess, 3 of Swords, 9 of Swords, Queen of Swords

Hades/Pluto (Underworld Deity): Death, 2 of Coins, 4 of Swords, 10 of Swords, King of Swords, King of Coins

Lady Columbia (Goddess of the New World): The Star, The Empress, Justice, 3 of Cups, 3 of Wands, Queen of Wands, Queen of Cups, Queen of Swords

Curious to see how others assign theirs.

I don't use reversals at all, and I don't even shuffle in a way that would make them, but somehow every time I pull Death it's reversed. Classic.

Hades often shows up in my readings as the King of Pentacles. He actually picked that card himself and leans on it a lot.

A few other deities I work with chose a "their" card when I asked, but interestingly they rarely bring those associations into readings. 🙂

EmmaCollins That take on Pluto and wealth actually lines up with his Roman role — he's long been linked to the underworld and hidden riches in the earth, a mythic association that predates modern occultism.

On Lilith and The Lovers, that’s a pretty common modern esoteric move, especially in some occult and feminist readings. The idea of Lilith as the serpent in Eden isn't in the Hebrew Bible or early Jewish sources; it's a later blending of figures that different traditions handle in very different ways.

About your system, honestly, I'd simplify. When every deity gets five to seven cards the associations start to blur and readings get messy. A lot of practitioners stick to one to three core cards per entity so the signal stays clearer.

Less can actually make the connections stronger and easier to read consistently.

EmilyHart If it works for you and the associations hold up in readings, that’s the main thing.

Tarot is pretty personal, so different approaches can be valid as long as they make sense to you. Some people stick to tight, minimal correspondences, others like to layer lots of symbolism.

If it ever starts to feel cluttered or confusing, that’s usually the sign to tweak things, but there’s no rule saying you have to simplify.

Freya as the Queen of Pentacles fits really well: earthy, abundant, sensual, and a grounded nurturer/provider. You see that correspondence across a lot of modern systems for her.

Odin as the Emperor in Murder of Crows Tarot works too. He brings authority, strategy and sovereignty, and adding Hugin and Munin highlights his knowledge-seeking side rather than just the ruler role.
