How do you actually develop intuition with tarot spreads as a beginner?

I’m pretty new to tarot - started around mid-January, near my birthday - and still trying to figure things out. I bought the Tarot of the Divine deck with its guidebook plus another tarot book, and I’ve been doing daily draws since then.

Thing is, I don’t really feel that “connection” everyone talks about. I’m not very spiritual overall, but some of my readings have been weirdly accurate and that throws me off.

I’ve seen people say meditation helps build intuition or connect with the cards, but I honestly don’t know what that actually looks like. How do you do that? And are there other ways to get better at reading spreads and trusting your gut?

Would really appreciate any advice 🙏

I’d try pulling a card at random during the day and sitting with it for a few minutes. Notice the first thing that jumps out-what in the picture grabs you or what thought pops into your head-and jot that down. After that, look the card up in a guidebook and compare your reaction with the traditional meaning. Do this regularly and you’ll start to spot patterns and build your own feel for the cards.

I’d add try noticing the cards in everyday life, not just when you’re doing spreads. For me, that really helped build the intuitive link.

Also get a feel for each suit’s energy. I think of tarot as a symbolic language you learn to read and speak over time. The more you see how the images work together, the more natural it feels.

Like, the motivation that got you to make this post? Wand energy. The discussion and weighing of options here? Swords. That little emotional click or relief when something lands? Cups. And the practical, useful results you actually apply in life? Pentacles/coins.

Stuff like that made the cards feel more alive for me 🙂

Honestly, one of the best things you can do for your intuition is pick a deck whose artwork you actually love. For me, intuition and inspiration go together - when the images click, it’s much easier for your subconscious to work with the cards and let meanings surface.

I picture each card as a movie scene. If you wandered into the room mid-scene and only saw that one moment, how would you describe it?

Then pull a few more cards and read them like the plot is unfolding. Notice how they behave around each other, does one look defensive toward another, or moving closer, or is there some kind of invisible barrier?

Context matters a lot. Treat the reading like a film: the querent is the lead, the question is the plot, and the cards are scenes you can use as metaphors.

Practice regularly and the cards start feeling familiar, your intuition gets stronger. After a while you can layer in the traditional meanings and more symbolism to give your reads extra depth. And don’t worry if a “textbook” meaning doesn’t fit - sometimes your gut read makes more sense for that particular story.
