What Does “Intuitive Reader” Actually Mean in Tarot?

Okay, genuine question: what do people mean when they call themselves an "intuitive reader" in tarot?

If you use that label, what does "intuitive" look like in your practice? Do you follow feelings and vibes, the imagery and symbolism, psychic impressions, personal interpretation, or something else?

And if you don't call yourself an intuitive reader, why not?

I see that term all over tarot spaces, but I'm realizing I'm not sure everyone means the same thing by it.

For me, intuition in a reading feels like something beyond memorized card meanings or neat logical links. Sometimes it isn’t even thinking in the usual way. It comes as random impressions, feelings, flashes of imagery, half-formed thoughts, dream fragments, or weird little nudges bubbling up from beneath conscious awareness. Kind of like waking dreams.

A truly intuitive hit can appear out of nowhere, which makes it super subjective and hard to describe. That’s why folks tell you to “stop thinking” when you read - not because logic is useless, but because overanalyzing will drown out those quieter impressions.

Yeah, that’s basically how I see it too. For me, all tarot reading uses intuition to some degree, even when someone leans on traditional meanings, symbolism, spreads, correspondences, psychology, and so on.

When a reader labels themselves as doing “intuitive tarot,” I usually take that as shorthand for “I’m not claiming psychic powers or spirit communication.” It typically means they’re working from emotional impressions, pattern recognition, empathy, and personal interpretation, rather than saying they can predict the future or channel entities.

It can also mean they’re more flexible with card meanings. Instead of “this card always equals X,” they follow whatever feeling or image comes up in the moment.

That's how I see it too. I still read the cards like any other tarot reader, but I often pick up on the querent’s emotional state, fears, relationships, circumstances, or the energy around a situation. Sometimes little details come through that aren't directly in the spread but end up being relevant to the person.

Honestly, for me "intuitive reading" means the work goes beyond memorized meanings and leans on impressions. Every now and then I get a strong sense that a deceased loved one is trying to pass along a message. Not everyone works that way, of course, and most readers develop their own style of connecting with the process.
