Tarot vs Oracle cards - what’s the difference?

I’ve been working with tarot about six months and feel pretty comfortable now. I’m thinking of getting a new deck but keep getting mixed up about how tarot decks and oracle decks actually differ. Can anyone explain the difference or share how you use each one?

I’m probably going to get a bit pedantic here, but I think this is worth clearing up.

Technically anything used for divination can be called an oracle, so yes, a tarot deck is an oracle deck. Tarot just happens to be a very specific, structured system - 78 cards split into Major and Minor Arcana with established meanings and patterns. There are other structured systems too, like Lenormand, and then there are looser oracle decks that don’t follow tarot’s layout but still have their own internal logic.

So “oracle deck” doesn’t automatically mean something fluffy, affirmations-only, or “love and light” themed. It’s just a different style or approach to divination. Tarot is an oracle as well - just a particular kind.

I use an oracle deck alongside tarot instead of picking one over the other.

For me, tarot's my go-to for structured spreads like past-present-future and deeper layouts. If I need a bit more clarity or a second layer, I’ll pull an oracle card to expand on what the tarot showed.

There are so many oracle decks out there - I’d honestly suggest trying a few to see which ones click with you. Oracle cards tend to feel more direct and easier to read, while tarot is more symbolic and layered.

I find oracle cards usually have clearer, standalone meanings, so they can be easier to drop into a specific situation. For me they work great as an extra layer of insight-sometimes I use them with tarot, sometimes by themselves depending on the reading. I don’t think one system is inherently better or more “advanced” than the other; they just work differently and each has its strengths. Using them together often deepens a reading instead of one replacing the other.

Look at the card count. A traditional tarot deck has 78 cards, so if a deck has 78 you can pretty safely assume it’s tarot. Decks with different numbers usually fall into the oracle or custom-system category. A few tarot decks add extra cards or tweak the structure, but 78 is the usual baseline for a classic tarot setup.
