Tarot honestly didn’t really click for me until I started reading cards in groups. Weirdly enough, I actually find single-card pulls harder to interpret than spreads.
That said, if you already feel comfortable with individual card meanings, you’re probably in a pretty good spot. You can absolutely start by reading each card on its own within the spread, then connect it back to whatever that position is meant to represent – past/future, conscious/unconscious, hopes/fears, etc., depending on the spread you’re using.
If you want to get into reading combinations more deeply, I’d suggest starting with the minor arcana and looking a bit into elemental dignities. For example, fire next to water can show opposing energies that weaken or cancel each other out, while something like air-fire-air in a three-card spread could suggest passion or action being stirred up in a very mental/intellectual environment. Stuff like that can really help when you’re trying to see how the cards are interacting rather than just reading them one by one.
Paul Hughes Barlow also wrote some really good, concise guides on this over at Supertarot. The site got redesigned a while back and it’s kind of a nightmare to navigate now, so I’m not sure how easy those essays are to find anymore, but they’re definitely worth looking for if you can.
