How literally do you take zodiac signs in tarot readings?

I’ve been doing a few love readings for myself lately and a pattern’s popping up that’s got me puzzled.

Whenever I ask about his zodiac sign I keep pulling Swords - like, card after card. It’s happened enough times that it feels hard to write off. But when I ask specific things, like whether I’ve dated him before, the Six of Cups shows up.

What’s odd is I don’t have a history with air signs - most of my past partners were Taurus, Virgo, and once Pisces - and I can’t think of any air-sign guys I’m into or even know well right now.

So I’m curious how literal people take suit/zodiac links in readings. Do repeated Swords usually mean an air sign to you, or do you read them more as mental/communication vibes or something else?

There really isn't a single, agreed-on rulebook for tarot. If you want it to be useful, you end up building your own approach by borrowing ideas from other people and seeing what actually clicks. It's not a fixed system you memorize and repeat every time; it's more of a creative practice. If you just take something from online and treat it as gospel because it's convenient, your readings can feel a bit surface-level. But if you try things out, tweak them, and watch what works in your own spreads, you gradually develop a style that's more meaningful and steady for you.

Yeah, I see a lot of overlap between astrology and tarot-I work with both. A few readings I’ve done had cards that lined up really neatly with what was going on in someone’s chart, so I don’t think the two are totally separate.

That said, I don’t take a zodiac show-up in the cards as a literal pointing to that exact sign every time. It can be about a general vibe or personality trait, or sometimes it feels closer to a different sign altogether.

Astrology and tarot are different systems, and they don’t really map onto each other in any consistent way.

A lot of the zodiac-to-card connections people use come from folks like Mathers, Waite, and Crowley, who tried to link the Major Arcana with astrological signs and planets. The problem is none of them were trained astrologers, so when you look at both systems side by side those links can feel forced or uneven.

Early tarot decks didn’t have astrology at all. They grew out of classical, allegorical, and Christian imagery, and the astrological overlays were added later as an extra layer, not part of the original design.

So I wouldn’t treat those zodiac-card pairings as ironclad rules. They can be a handy symbolic shortcut in modern practice, but they’re optional, not a single unified system that always matches up.

I’m a Pisces and when I do readings for or with my Sagittarius husband, a consistent pairing keeps showing up - I usually come out as the Queen of Wands and he shows up as the Knight of Pentacles.

What’s funny is he’s a pretty grounded Sagittarius (he’s got Virgo rising), while I don’t have any fire placements at all. On paper it doesn’t really fit astrologically, but in readings those cards still feel right.

I like using astrology with tarot, but my intuition usually comes first. I was honestly surprised the first time I drew the Queen of Wands for myself, but it clicked immediately in the context.

Because of that I don’t take astrology super literally. I personally link the King of Swords with Aquarius energy, but I also use that card for people in science, research, publishing, or anyone who works in structured, rule-setting roles.

So maybe Swords energy is just pointing to someone who challenges your thinking or stimulates your mind, not necessarily a specific air sign.
