I think they're choosing to let go, maybe sacrificing their own feelings because it's better for the situation. Maybe they're involved with someone else, or they think you are, so they figure it's smarter to drop any hopes or actions. They probably feel pushing it would just create more complications without a good outcome. Kind of like they decided the trouble wasn't worth it and walked away. 🤷‍♂️

I'd say both. At first he held back his feelings, but now he seems to be letting himself feel it and go with the experience.
