I agree with you, but I also think it depends on the card spread you use to determine whether it's more "romantic" or "friendship" based. For me, one of the meanings of the card is being intimately connected to someone, fostering a close friendship and romantic connection. It also signifies feeling naturally at ease with the person—where conversations flow effortlessly. Even if you don't share many common interests, you still feel comfortable in their company, which speaks volumes about the ease and naturalness of being with that person.
Trust me, as someone as awkward as I am, even if I have a lot in common with someone, it's hard for me to engage in conversation. So, being with someone with whom I share little in common and yet feel comfortable talking at length says a lot.

Well, I've always thought it had to do with reciprocated love as well. However, after searching the forum, I found many people saying it was just friendship unless the Ten of Cups was present or another typical relationship card, for example.
Personally, I still associate it with romance. My current deck takes a more romantic approach to the card. If we focus on the imagery, they look like a couple toasting to each other. I have to say I fully agree with you on this one, but everybody has different viewpoints, I suppose.
