Confused about the meaning of Five of Pentacles reversed — any insights?

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to tarot and trying to get a grip on the cards’ meanings. I just got the Five of Pentacles reversed in a reading, and honestly, it’s kind of confusing.

I’ve looked up info online and in some books, but the explanations for both the upright and reversed versions seem all over the place. Most say it’s about hardship, being left out, or feeling rejected. Some sources say the upright card is bad and the reversed one is positive – like hope or seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Others say the opposite.

So, what’s the general take on this card? Why does it feel so confusing compared to other cards that seem more straightforward?

Also, how would you read a Pentacles card when it comes to love or feelings?

I totally get why this card feels confusing. What helped me was checking out the version from the Tarot of the New Vision deck – honestly, it’s one of the clearest takes I’ve seen. It shows what’s going on inside the church, which adds a whole new layer to the meaning.

To me, this card feels more like a heads-up that poverty – whether spiritual or material – is often a mindset. You can get past it if you stop fixating on what you don’t have and start appreciating what’s already there. It also speaks to pushing yourself away from others, missing out on the help that’s actually available.

And yeah, there’s definitely something about how the church in the image turns away from charity, but I think that idea can stretch into other areas of life too.

Samantha123 Honestly, I don’t always read reversals the usual way. To me, they just mean you need to pay extra attention. Sometimes they switch up the meaning, other times they don’t – depends a lot on the spread and where the card lands.

My two cents? For now, just flip reversed cards back to upright when you’re learning. There’s already so much to take in with the upright meanings and how cards relate to each other in a spread. Until you get that down, trying to figure out reversals will just confuse you and slow down your progress. Trust me, it can get really overwhelming.

There are definitely a bunch of cards with all kinds of mixed meanings. I think part of the fun is getting to know each card personally (still working on that with all 78 myself). Honestly, I’m really excited for you diving into this stuff!

Also, I’m not super into reading pentacles as just money stuff (but hey, everyone’s got their own take). For me, the Five of Pentacles usually pops up when I’m stubbornly refusing to ask for help (like the light shining through the window) and just standing outside in the cold alone – I've got a strong independent streak. I was kinda hesitant about tarot at first (thanks, Christian guilt), but my first deck was gently telling me there’s hope, light, and more out there; I don’t have to stay spiritually broke forever.
