I'm pretty new to tarot and trying to get a handle on meanings. I pulled the Five of Pentacles reversed in a reading and, honestly, it's throwing me off.

I've read stuff online and in books, but the explanations for upright and reversed feel all over the place. Most say the upright is about hardship, being left out, or feeling rejected. Some sources treat the reversed as a positive turn, like hope or relief, while others say the opposite.

What's the usual take on this card? Why does it feel so confusing compared to cards that seem more straightforward?

Also, how do you read a Pentacles card for love or feelings? Any practical ways to tell if it's about security vs emotional coldness?

I get why this card is confusing. What helped me was looking at the Tarot of the New Vision version - honestly, one of the clearest takes I’ve seen. It literally shows what’s happening inside the church, which adds a layer you don’t always notice.

For me this reads more like a heads-up that poverty, whether spiritual or material, can be a mindset. You can move past it if you stop fixating on what’s missing and start noticing what you already have. It also feels like a warning about pushing yourself away from others and missing out on help that’s actually there.

And yeah, the church turning away from charity is pretty obvious, but I don’t think that’s limited to religion. That dynamic can show up in other parts of life too.

Samantha123 Honestly, I don’t always read reversals the usual way. For me they mostly mean you need to pay closer attention. Sometimes they change the meaning, sometimes they don’t - it really depends on the spread and where the card sits.

My two cents? If you’re learning, flip reversals upright for now. There’s already a lot to get comfortable with in upright meanings and how cards interact in a spread. Trying to figure out reversals too early will just confuse you and slow you down. It can get pretty overwhelming.

Oh man, the Five of Pentacles totally haunted me when I first started tarot - I get you!

There are definitely a ton of cards with mixed meanings. Part of the fun for me has been getting to know each one personally (still working through all 78). I’m really excited you’re diving into this!

I also don’t read pentacles as only money stuff. For me, the Five usually shows up when I’m stubbornly refusing to ask for help, standing out in the cold while that little light shines through the window. I’ve got a strong independent streak, and I was nervous about tarot at first thanks to Christian guilt, but my first deck kept nudging me that there’s hope and light - I don’t have to stay spiritually broke forever.
