Yeah, I’ve wrestled with telling these apart too, but here’s how I usually look at them when they come up:
5 of Wands feels like a bunch of people trying to go in different directions at once — clashing egos, messy teamwork, or just too many voices and not enough cohesion. No one’s really winning anything, it’s more like chaos and crossed wires.
5 of Swords is way nastier. It's that “win at all costs” vibe — someone being manipulative, crossing a line, or walking away with a hollow victory. Think arguments where someone pushes too far or fights dirty.
7 of Wands gives me “defend your position” energy. You’ve already made some progress, but now you’re having to fight to keep it. People might be challenging your choices, but you’ve got the upper hand — if you stay focused and hold your ground.
As for the numbers —
Fives are usually a shake-up. Uncomfortable, sure, but also packed with energy and potential for growth if you handle it right.
Sevens, on the other hand, are more strategic. They’re like a test of your will or smarts — a chance to level up by staying sharp or true to yourself.
With the 7 of Wands, I’ve noticed that if you start letting too many other voices in, or second-guessing your path, it can slip right back into 5 of Wands territory — scattered and chaotic again.
Curious to hear how others see it too, but that’s how I’ve made sense of them so far!
