Honestly, I tend to base the numbers off the timeframe I’m reading for. Like, if I’m looking at something within the next month, then I’ll read the numbers as days or weeks. But if I’m pulling cards for a 6-month to 1-year window, I’ll think more in terms of months. It really depends on the scope of the question.
One thing I’ve learned the hard way: your subconscious wants to help, but you’ve got to give it something clear to work with. The way you phrase the question is so important. I heard this great quote recently — "If you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes." Same goes for tarot. If you ask vague or poorly framed questions (especially yes/no ones), you’re gonna get muddy answers.
I’ve found it helps to shift away from rigid timing questions and go for things like:
"What is the likelihood of X happening within this timeframe?"
"How can I increase my chances of Y in the next 3–6 months?"
"Will my current path lead me to [desired outcome]?"
These types of questions tend to yield more useful, actionable insights.
That said, if you really do want timing, looking at the astrological associations can be super helpful — lots of tarot decks and books include decans or date ranges. Lon Milo DuQuette’s Understanding the Tarot of the Thoth has some charts in the back that give exact date correspondences for the minor arcana. (For example, I was born Sept 17, so my card is Queen of Swords — and I’ve noticed people’s birth cards pop up a lot in readings, too.)
Also — sidenote — Lenormand is way more timing-friendly IMO. The cards have kind of a natural speed to them: Rider is quick, Tree is slow, and you’ve got 1–36 to work with if you’re looking for days or matching to calendar dates. It just feels a bit more precise.
Anyway, hope some of that helps! Timing’s tricky, but definitely not impossible once you find a system that makes sense to you.
