Totally echoing what a lot of folks here have already said — I usually don’t read reversals either. There’s just so much going on with the 78 cards upright, and the combos are endless. For me, that already gives plenty to work with. That said, if a card jumps out reversed or really feels reversed in context, I’ll pay attention — but honestly, that’s probably less than 30% of the time.
As for how I do interpret reversals when I bother with them, I don’t treat them as the direct opposite of the upright meaning. Instead, I see it more like the energy is blocked, delayed, or showing up in a distorted way.
With the 4s in general — they represent stability at their core (think four legs on a table kind of thing). But depending on the question, stability can easily shift into stagnation, boredom, or being stuck in a routine that’s no longer helpful. Even upright, the 4 of Wands can have layers like that.
So upright 4 of Wands? To me, it’s usually that you’re in a good place, grounded, maybe ready to build something or enjoy a milestone. Wands being fire — ambition, passion, fast-moving energy — you might be at a “pause” before the next leap forward.
If reversed, maybe you're wanting that progress but can’t move yet. Could be something unresolved in another area (another card might be hinting at it). But even that kind of interpretation? You can still pull it from the upright depending on what surrounds it.
If you’re new to tarot (and still leaning on the little white book — which we’ve all done, no shame), I’d say focus on getting solid with the upright meanings first. Really get a feel for how the cards interact in spreads and trust your gut as much as your references. Definitely journal your readings — that’s where a lot of personal insights start to click.
Good luck on the journey!
