Qabalah - The four functions

I've been diving into Qabalah and ran into the idea of the four functions. I'm not totally clear on what each one actually means or how they relate to Tarot. Anyone have a plain explanation or examples of how those functions show up in readings or on specific cards? Book recs or resources would be great too.

The Four Functions are four codes Qabalists use to work out relationships between numbers, symbols, and other spiritual elements. They are (1) Numeration; (2) Gematria; (3) Notarikon; and (4) Temurah. Together they’re ways of working with the Qabalistic Tree of Life to reveal layers of meaning.

With Tarot, the Four Functions help unpack archetypes and the deeper spiritual layers of each card. The number tied to a card helps clarify its basic essence. Gematria links words and attributes through numerical value, giving specific correspondences. Notarikon teases out symbolic messages by using initials or abbreviations. And Temurah lets you shift letters or words around to uncover hidden connections between cards.

For me, the four functions in Qabalah are the four levels of manifestation: Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, and Assiah. Each one represents a different aspect of creation and links to the elements used in Tarot.

@Joanna13 That's right! Atziluth is the world of pure spirit and is linked with the element of fire. For me it's the realm of divine inspiration, the spark behind all creation.

Briah is tied to the element of water. It's where the creative sparks from Atziluth begin to take on shape, with emotion and intuition coming forward and those concepts starting to manifest.

Exactly! For me, Briah feels like the bridge that lets creative energy pour into Yetzirah, the air realm. Yetzirah is the world of thought and intellect, where ideas are worked on and polished.

Assiah is the earth plane, the physical world where the ideas and impressions from Yetzirah actually turn into things you can touch.

You can see the four functions reflected in the Minor Arcana: Wands with Atziluth and fire, Cups with Briah and water, Swords with Yetzirah and air, and Pentacles with Assiah and earth.
