Honestly, The Devil is probably my favorite "scary but actually not scary" card. A lot of people tense up when they see it, but I’ve never really read it as pure doom-and-gloom energy. To me, it’s way more about self-awareness and freedom than fear.
Fun fact: The Devil and The Lovers are both tied to the number 6, which is all about choice. The Lovers is usually about making the "right" choice — long-term values over short-term gratification. The Devil, on the other hand, asks: what are your desires, your passions, the things you really want but might be too afraid to claim? It challenges you to recognize the chains (habits, beliefs, external pressures) that keep you from fully living — and then decide if you’re willing to break them.
Astrologically, it’s linked to Capricorn and Saturn, so there’s definitely discipline and responsibility baked into it. But I don’t see the chains in the imagery as something The Devil puts on us — they’re the chains we accept or place on ourselves. The card shows up as a reminder that you can take them off whenever you’re ready. That’s not "evil"; that’s empowerment.
So yeah, for me The Devil is more of a guide. It’s like it says: the path forward isn’t easy, but it’s worth it if you want to live authentically. It’s about passion, honesty with yourself, and the hard work it takes to evolve. Not a bad guy at all — more like a tough teacher who pushes you toward freedom.
