Hey, great question — this is something a lot of us wondered when we first started!
It’s definitely important to ask clear and appropriate questions when working with tarot, even when you’re using a set spread. Most spreads are actually made up of mini-questions — each card position usually represents something specific (like "past influences," "what’s blocking you," etc.), so you’re kind of following a question guide just by using the spread.
One cool thing about spreads is that the cards interact with each other. For example, if you’re doing a love reading and a Queen and King show up next to each other, that can be a really good sign. The layout (or shape) of the spread can also carry symbolic meaning — a lot of spread creators get creative with this. And yep, once you’re more comfortable, you can totally start designing your own spreads too.
As for phrasing your questions, it helps to keep them open-ended and constructive. Think along the lines of:
"What do I need to know about…"
"How can I improve…"
"What’s the best way forward with…"
These kinds of questions give the cards room to speak and give you more insight, rather than just a yes or no answer (which tarot isn’t great for anyway).
Try to keep your questions positive and focused. You can say your question out loud if you want, or just hold it in your mind — both ways work fine. The main thing is that you're really concentrating on what you're asking.
When you're ready, shuffle the cards while thinking about your question, and go from there. You can use a formal spread or just pull a few cards freestyle — there’s no strict rule, just what feels right for you in the moment.
Hope that helps! 😊
