Hey folks, thought I’d share a stripped-down method for reading playing cards. This isn’t "my" system — I picked up most of it from Dawn Jackson and Camelia Elias (definitely check them out if you want to go deeper). You could call this a kind of cunning folk approach: super simple, super logical.
Why bother?
It gets you fluent in reading without needing to memorize a giant encyclopedia of meanings.
And honestly, a regular deck of cards is shockingly useful and responsive once you get the hang of it.
How it works: Always read in threes, even if you’re laying out a bigger spread. Then go through these stages:
Stage 1: Color
Stage 2: Suit
♥ Hearts → emotions, relationships, family
♦ Diamonds → money, thinking, deals
♣ Clubs → work, plans, career
♠ Spades → problems/trouble
Stage 3: Number/Rank
Ace → beginnings
2 → partnerships, exchanges
3 → a bit more of something
4 → stability, not much change
5 → the body
6 → paths
7 → trouble
8 → ideas
9 → changes
10 → endings / a lot of something
Jack → children/messages
Queen → women/facts
King → men/power
Examples:
Q: Will I get a promotion?
Cards: 4♠, 10♣, 3♠
→ All black = bad news. Troubles on either side of work. Ranks show a stagnant, stressful environment (4♠), lots of work (10♣), and more trouble (3♠). Translation: promotion? Nope. Time to rethink that career path.
Q: Will my ex and I get back together?
Cards: 5♥, 2♣, 6♦
→ Colors = yes, but with bumps (red/black/red). Suits say: relationship requires work (2♣) on both emotional (5♥) and financial (6♦) fronts. Numbers show growth if effort is made. So yes, but only with effort.
And that’s basically it! Of course, there are more associations you can layer in, but this is enough to start using a regular deck as a surprisingly sharp oracle.
