Do 3-card spreads have to be past, present, future?

Just curious how much intent matters when you’re pulling cards.

Today I pulled 3 cards without any specific layout in mind — no question, no intention to do past/present/future or anything structured like that. Normally, if I’m feeling this unfocused, I’ll just pull one card. But this time, I laid out three side by side and just sat with them.

Thing is… they didn’t really fit into a timeline. But when I looked at them as all reflecting my current state, it suddenly made total sense. So I’m thinking maybe that was the reading — just not in a traditional format.

Does anyone else do this too? Pull multiple cards with no spread in mind and then interpret based on how they seem to speak? Would love to hear how you approach it.

I pretty much always read for the present, so when I use a 3-card spread, I don’t think in terms of past/present/future.

For me, it usually goes like this:

Left: What wisdom can I take from this
Middle: The core energy or theme of the situation
Right: Guidance or advice for moving forward

The middle card is kind of the "anchor" of the reading, and the other two add context or support. This layout has worked really well for me, whether I have a specific question or I’m just pulling for general insight.

Honestly, I think intention is everything when it comes to readings. A lot of people throw down three random cards and then get frustrated when it doesn’t make any sense — but if there’s no clear question or structure, the reading can end up feeling really muddled.

This is kind of Tarot 101: if you don’t define the spread or at least have some framework (like what each card position means), how can you expect a clear answer? It’s like trying to crack a combination lock without knowing the code. The cards need context to speak clearly.

Not saying you always have to be super rigid, but some kind of intention or clarity really helps the message come through.
