Do 3-card spreads have to be past, present, future?

Just wondering how important intent is when you pull cards.

Today I laid out three cards with no spread, no question, nothing structured. Usually when I’m unfocused like that I’ll just pull one card. But for some reason I put three side by side and sat with them.

At first they didn’t line up as past/present/future at all. Then I tried reading them as different facets of what’s happening now, and suddenly it clicked. Felt like the reading was about my current state rather than a timeline.

Do you ever pull multiple cards with no spread and let the meaning emerge? How do you approach that kind of reading?

I pretty much always read for the present, so when I do a three-card spread I skip past/present/future.

Usually I lay it out like this:

Left: What wisdom I can take from this
Middle: The main energy or what's at the heart of the situation
Right: Guidance or advice for moving forward

The middle card's kind of the anchor, and the other two give context and support. This setup's worked really well for me, whether I've got a specific question or I'm just pulling for general insight.

Honestly, intention matters way more than people think. So many folks just drop three random cards and then get annoyed when nothing makes sense. If there’s no clear question or structure, the reading ends up muddled. Basic point: if you don’t define the spread or at least assign a role to each position, how can the cards give a clear answer? It’s like trying to open a combination lock without the code. You don’t have to be rigid, but having some purpose or clarity really helps the message come through.
