One for grounding, one for reflection, and one to invite permission from our guides. * The seeker must touch the cards in some way before I read — whether it's shuffling, cutting, or just placing their hands on the deck. * I will (and should) refuse a reading if I feel the seeker’s energy is off, or the cards feel closed to them. * I keep my cards wrapped when not in use. * I “dust” the cards between readings—either with a clear quartz or a gentle breath. * I’ve noticed that outdoor readings feel easier, even with noise or distraction. * I don’t read full spreads for myself — sometimes I’ll pull a single card, but that’s it. * No books, no guides. I don’t read cards as individual meanings. Each card is more like a window into a larger “house” of the situation — I read the whole space. * If something random comes up — a word, a name, a color — I say it. I’ve been reading for about seven years now, and while I wouldn’t say I have strict rules, there are definitely things I always do — or don’t do. * The cards are always right. If something feels off, it’s your interpretation, not the deck. * Decide everything before the reading starts: the question, the spread, whether to use reversals, how many times you’re shuffling/cutting, etc. No improvising once you're in it. * Almost never pull just one card. Tarot shines when the cards interact with each other. * Never cleanse the deck. Ever. For me, it’s about as effective as stabbing the deck with a dagger — so, not doing that. * Don’t read when you’re in a bad headspace. You’ll get nothing useful from it. * Always put jumpers back in the deck without looking at them. No exceptions. * Have fun with it! * And maybe… don’t leave your deck scattered on the floor for two months straight and then accidentally step on it and bend half the cards. Learned that one the hard way. I don’t do a lot of the "fancy" stuff — no cloth wraps, crystals, or meditating. I’ve got chronic fatigue, and the way I shuffle already takes a while, so I try to keep everything else as streamlined as possible. Honestly... I don’t think I have any real rules!

If I’m reading in person, I usually have the other person shuffle — mostly just to help them feel more connected to the process, not because I think it has to be done that way.

I do have certain habits (like I tend to shuffle and cut the same way every time out of muscle memory), but nothing I’d call a rule. I don’t mind if people touch my cards or not, I don’t do any specific rituals before or after readings, and I don’t store my decks in any special way.

I’ve been using tarot for around 10 years now, and I’ve kind of just let it stay loose and intuitive. No fixed structure — just whatever feels right in the moment.

It sounds like over time you’ve just let the practice settle into something very natural and flexible for you, without needing a fixed structure around it. I think that’s something a lot of long-term readers eventually drift toward in one way or another — less about “rules” and more about what feels steady in the moment.

I also like the idea of keeping it intuitive without over-ritualizing it. It keeps the focus on the reading itself rather than everything surrounding it.
