If you want to share, say how long you’ve been reading too - I love seeing how practices change over time. My rules: - I always start with three intentional breaths, and I do them with the seeker. One to ground, one to reflect, one to invite permission from our guides. - The seeker has to touch the cards before I read. Shuffling, cutting, or just resting their hands on the deck is fine. - I will, and should, refuse a reading if the seeker’s energy feels off or the cards seem closed to them. - Cards stay wrapped when not in use. - I “dust” the deck between readings - usually with a clear quartz or a gentle breath. - Outdoor readings feel easier to me, even if there’s noise or people around. - I don’t do full spreads for myself. Maybe a single card now and then, that’s it. - No books, no cheat sheets. I don’t read cards as isolated meanings. A card is more like a window into a bigger house of the situation, so I read the whole space. - If a random word, name, or color pops in, I say it. Those stray things usually need to be said, even when they seem unrelated. - Sometimes the cards won’t answer. I take that as a cue that the seeker’s free will needs room, and that Spirit is protecting that choice by shifting things. - Between us, the cards aren’t wrong. If something’s off, it’s my reading or my interpretation that needs work. - This might rub some people the wrong way, but I don’t require payment if the energy feels safe. I believe people seeking truth should be able to find it, and for me the balance returns in other ways. I’ve been reading about seven years, and while I don’t have rigid rules, there are a few things I always do - or avoid. * The cards don’t lie. If something feels off, it’s usually my interpretation, not the deck. * Decide everything before you start: the question, the spread, whether you’re doing reversals, how many times you’ll shuffle/cut. No improvising once you begin. * Almost never pull just one card. Tarot works best when the cards interact. * Never cleanse the deck. Ever. For me it’s as useful as stabbing the deck with a dagger, so I don’t bother. * Don’t read when you’re in a crappy headspace. You won’t get anything helpful. * Always put jumpers back in the deck without looking at them. No exceptions. * Have fun with it! * And maybe don’t leave your deck on the floor for two months and then step on it and bend half the cards. Learned that one the hard way. I don’t do much of the “fancy” stuff, like cloth wraps, crystals, or long meditations. I have chronic fatigue and my shuffling already takes forever, so I try to keep the rest streamlined. Honestly, I don't really have any hard rules.

If I'm reading in person I usually let the other person shuffle, mostly so they feel more connected to the process-not because it has to be that way.

I do have habits, like shuffling and cutting the same way every time out of muscle memory, but that's about it. I don't mind if people touch my cards, I don't do rituals before or after readings, and I don't store my decks in any special way.

I've been working with tarot for around 10 years and have kept things loose and intuitive. No fixed structure-just whatever feels right in the moment.

Lauren78 I love that. Sounds like you’ve let the practice loosen up over time so it feels natural and flexible instead of rigid. I think a lot of long-term readers drift that way - fewer rules, more of what feels steady in the moment.
