I’ve been diving deep into tarot lately, and the more I read, the more confused I get — especially around reversed cards.

From what I understand, reversed cards usually reflect the same general theme as the upright version, just flipped in some way. Like The Sun upright is joy and success, while reversed it's more like ego, burnout, or failure. That makes sense to me.

But then there’s The Moon reversed, and I keep seeing sources say it still means secrecy, betrayal, illusions — basically the same things as the upright version. So now I’m confused. What’s the actual difference between upright and reversed Moon when it shows up in a love reading?

Is it just more hidden secrets? Is it starting to come to light? Is the illusion lifting — or getting worse?

I see The Moon as more about our inner world than anything external — it’s not really about what’s being done to us, but how we’re interpreting things emotionally and subconsciously. It’s all the stuff we keep hidden: our fears, doubts, insecurities… but also our dreams and deeper desires. It’s definitely not a card of logic or clarity — it’s murky and emotional.

When it’s reversed, I personally see it as going even deeper into that internal space. It can feel disorienting, but there’s also an opportunity there. It’s like being in the dark so long that your eyes finally adjust and you start to see things more clearly. There’s potential for clarity, but only if you’re willing to really face what’s down there.

In the context of a love reading, I often read The Moon reversed as being pushed to confront the fears or insecurities you might be projecting onto your partner (or a potential partner). It’s an invitation to work through those feelings so they don’t control your actions or distort your perception of the relationship.

It’s definitely a heavy card, but not necessarily a bad one — it just asks for inner work.

For me, reversals often mean either having too much of something or too little. Like with The Sun — upright it’s all bright, joyful futures, but reversed could mean things feel dimmer or you’re kind of blind to what’s really going on around you.

The Moon is such an elegant card. Yeah, it’s about illusion and secrecy, but I see the upright Moon more like an illusion you are telling yourself — the card’s trying to help you see through that fog. When it’s reversed though, I feel like it shifts more outward — like someone else is being secretive or creating an illusion for you. Or maybe you do know you’re lying to yourself, but you’re holding on to the lie because facing the truth feels too hard.

That’s just how I personally read it anyway. Would love to hear if others feel the same or differently!
