Hey, I know this was posted a while ago, but I felt drawn to share what I’ve seen the Five of Pentacles mean in my own readings.
It’s not just about "struggling together" like some kind of noble thing. Sure, you’re physically together, but the connection might not be as strong as it looks. If the relationship was actually getting stronger through the tough times, I’d expect to see the Five of Pentacles reversed instead — because reversed usually means recovery, like there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
In my experience, the upright Five of Pentacles often shows two people kind of out for themselves, each playing the victim in their own way. Think about the Four of Pentacles that comes before it — someone holding on way too tight to what feels secure. Then with the Five, things have gotten worse. You might feel like the other person doesn’t really care about your needs or what matters to you. They’re not walking side-by-side, more like one is moving ahead while the other is limping behind.
There’s help available (the light in the window), but excuses keep getting in the way. Honestly, I don’t see the upright Five of Pentacles as a good card for relationships — it’s more like the "things aren’t fun anymore" card. It signals harder times ahead unless something changes.
I’ve only seen things improve when the card comes up reversed. If it keeps showing up upright, especially as an outcome, it feels like both people are stuck in a losing battle — each trying to prove their own struggles or pain are worse, feeling abandoned and like the other person only cares about themselves. It’s that kind of toxic dynamic where both sides are competing over who’s the bigger victim. That’s very much what the Five of Pentacles feels like to me.
Anyone else see it this way?
