Why is Sagittarius Represented by Temperance?

I’ve been looking into the major arcana and their zodiac links, and I just learned Sagittarius is paired with Temperance. That threw me off. Temperance feels like balance and blending two things, which sounds way more Libra to me. Sagittarius, to my mind, is about philosophy, higher learning, spirituality and big passion — not exactly balance.

I get some pairings are obvious, like Scorpio with Death, but I’m not seeing why Temperance and Sagittarius would go together. How are the cards and signs connected here? What am I missing about Temperance or Sagittarius that ties them? I’m still new to tarot (only been reading for a few days, mostly for myself) and just starting astrology, so any simple explanations would help a lot.

I've always thought Sagittarius vibes with The Chariot, too. It's all about forward motion, exploration, chasing new horizons, so the Chariot's push and determination just make sense. At the same time, Temperance brings a steady kind of balance and direction that fits Sagittarius' hunger for growth and learning, so I can see that angle as well. Either way, it's an interesting pairing.

Sagittarius isn’t just movement or travel — it’s about turning experience into meaning, building philosophy, synthesizing ideas. Temperance is that blending or distilling, taking different influences and finding a higher harmony.

So it’s not Libra-style even-weight balance; Temperance is more like alchemy, combining things into something refined. That suits Sagittarius’ way of growing through experience and turning knowledge into wisdom.

The Chariot, on the other hand, often maps better to Cancer in traditional correspondences — it’s about emotional containment, steering opposing forces with will instead of outward exploration.

So basically:

Sagittarius / Temperance → integration, meaning-making, philosophical synthesis
Cancer / Chariot → control, direction, holding opposites steady

It’s less obvious than Scorpio/Death, but if you frame Temperance as refining experience into wisdom, the Sagittarius link starts to feel clearer.
